CITY OF WAYNE

Position:   Building Inspector  

Hourly Rate:  $32.87 - Annual: $64, 095 - 37.5 hours per week  

General Statement of Duties:   

The building inspector is responsible for the enforcement of the building codes and ordinances. 

Review applications and plan review for building permit issuances & compliance. 

Perform code and ordinance interpretation. 

Assist the Building Official with updating the code reference for review letters. 

Conduct on-site inspections throughout the various phases of construction to ensure compliance with code and ordinances.  

Document and file all violation notices or stop work order and in the proper format. 

May be required to appear in court to present testimony regarding code and ordinance violations.  

Assists the public (including homeowners, developers, licensed builders, architects, and engineers)  

Answers proficiently inquiries regarding code and ordinance requirements.

Northfield Township

Northfield Township is seeking an experienced, service-oriented, and certified professional to serve as its next Building Official.

Northfield Township is a welcoming and forward-thinking community with a strong focus on quality development and exceptional customer service. The Township's Building Department plays a key role in supporting the community goals and ensuring safe buildings across the community.

The Building Official is a full-time position responsible for the enforcement and administration of all applicable Michigan Building Codes and Township ordinances. The position supervises the Building Department, manages contracted inspectors, coordinates with planning and zoning staff, and ensures excellent customer service to residents, developers, and business owners. The ideal candidate will be experienced in residential and commercial construction and inspections and will be a collaborative problem solver.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enforce Michigan Building Codes and Township ordinances.
  • Review and approve building permits, plans, and applications.
  • Conduct and oversee inspections for compliance and safety.
  • Supervise Building Department staff and contracted inspectors.
  • Provide excellent customer service through community engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with Township departments and officials.
  • Manage department budgeting, reporting, and code enforcement procedures.
  • Represent the Township at meetings with officials, boards, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • State of Michigan certifications: Building Official, Building Inspector, and Plan Reviewer.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel throughout the Township.
  • Ability to be proficient in relevant software, including BS&A and Microsoft Office.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or certification in Construction Management, Architecture, Planning, or a related field, with 5 years of progressive experience in building inspection, construction, plan review, and enforcement.
  • OR a high school diploma/GED with 8 years of progressive experience in similar roles.
